Measure the inside of your window in three places: Top, middle and bottom. If you are doing an inside mount, you will need to take the smallest width to determine the width of your blind. Choosing the smallest width is necessarily so that your blind will operate smoothly as you raise and lower it. You will need to measure the length of your window from the longest part of the window to determine the length of your blind. If you are doing an outside mount, which is the easiest of the two mounting options, you will need to determine where you want your Roman blind to begin and how far you want the blind to extend beyond the window, from both sides. Often, people put up blinds to keep the sun from coming in and want to cover what is called the "light strike." Depending upon what part of the day it is, the sun's rays will seep through the sides of the blind.

Purchase the Roman blind. Once you have determined how you want to mount the blind on the window you will need to mount the blind by installing the window brackets that usually come with the blind kit. Depending on the mounting of your choice will determine where you place your brackets.

Installing an inside mount: When mounting an inside mount, the Roman blind should not make contact with the top of the window frame, or any other obstruction when raised and lowered. Before installing the brackets, you will need to position the mount brackets inside the window frame. The brackets need to be aligned and level with one another, on both sides of the window. Once the blind is installed, it should move freely between the brackets.

Installing an outside mount: When mounting an outside mount, the Roman blind should not make contact with the top of the window frame, or any other obstruction when raised and lowered. Before installing the brackets, position the mount brackets outside the window frame, clearing all obstructions. The brackets need to be aligned and level with one another, on both sides of the window. Once the blind is installed, it should move freely between the brackets. Be sure to allow 1/8 inch of additional space between the brackets so the mechanism will rotate freely.

If there are children living in the home, or will be frequenting the home or place of business, make sure that child safety latches are installed with the blinds. You can ask your local blind or hardware to store to pick some up.
