There are few things as irritating or as painful as a toothache. Remedy after remedy is tried to no avail. Toothaches can be managed and maintained until a dentist can examine the problem. Here are some steps to treat toothaches.

From Quick Guide: Curing Toothaches
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Swish water around in the mouth. Make sure that the water is room temperature. Room temperature mouthwash may work as well, but be mindful that the alcohol in mouthwash may irritate an abrasion in the mouth. Perform this rinse two to three times to dislodge any food particles that may be in the mouth causing pain.

  2. Step 2

Use floss to mildly dislodge foreign particles. Be sure to perform this task as delicately as possible to avoid further injury to the affected area.

  3. Step 3

Take a spoon and mash one to two aspirin into a powder. Dab the powder with the index finger and lightly apply it to the infected area. This not solving the toothache problem, but it will provide some temporary relief until the problem can be resolved.

  4. Step 4

Avoid crunchy or hard foods. Anything that will cause trauma to the affected area may cause additional problems. Liquids at room temperature will work best. Soups that are extremely hot or full of crunchy vegetables may work as well. It would be prudent to avoid foods that will breakdown into smaller food particles and become lodged in the teeth.

  5. Step 5

See a dentist. A toothache may be a sign of a more serious condition. Make an appointment as soon as possible.
