  1. How to Use a Riffler or Rasp Sculpture Tool

    • 1

Choose the right stone. Most sculptors do this by examining specific elements, like curves in the surface, for example. You have to pick the right kind of stone in order to properly use a riffler or rasp sculpture tool. If you do not pick the right kind or stone or wood, it will be difficult to manipulate your surfaces later. You may also mistakenly damage your tool, as well.

    • 2

Rough it out. You generally do not use a riffler or rasp tool in the beginning. Some carvers play around with their surfaces, however. By making a sweeping motion along the surfaces with their tools, an artist might be able to develop a “feeling” about the project they have chosen. The softer the stone the better the finishing touches will probably be.

    • 3

Use during final stage. A riffler or rasp tool is used in the final stages of smoothing and forming. People do have to option of using power tools, but they do not bring about the same effect. Use a riffler or rasp to texturize your sculpture. This is done by simply leaving the scratch marks on the surface. You can always remove them with sandpaper if you choose.

    • 4

Use long motions. When carving in wood or in stone, in particular, be sure to use long sweeping strokes, either up or down and left to right. It does not matter which, but try to be consistent, if you can. The end result will produce a long or flowing effect.
