How to Make a Sandbox Cover

A sandbox cover is essential in keeping sand dry and free from animal droppings, leaves and other undesirable items. Although there are several types of sandbox covers available, one quick, easy and reliable option is to make a basic sandbox cover using a plastic tarp.Follow these simple instructions to make a plastic cover for your square, wooden sandbox.

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • Plastic tarp with grommets
  • Pan head screws
  • Drill
  • Pencil
  • Bucket

    How to Make a Sandbox Cover

  1. Step 1

    Measure the width and length of your sandbox.

  2. Step 2

    Measure three-quarters of the distance of the sandbox walls. Add this number to the length and width measurements of your sandbox.

  3. Step 3

    Purchase a plastic tarp with grommets big enough to cover your sandbox and overlap half way down the sides of the sandbox walls.

  4. Step 4

    Place a bucket in the middle of the sandbox to prevent water from pooling on the tarp.

  5. Step 5

    Cover the sandbox with the tarp.

  6. Step 6

    Use the pencil to mark where the grommets land on the walls of the sandbox.

  7. Step 7

    Use a drill to put screws where the pencil marks are. Drill screws one-half to three-quarters of the way into the wood.

  8. Step 8

    Attach the grommets over the screws.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cover your sandbox when not in use.
  • Always supervise children who are playing in the sandbox.
