How to Treat Spasms

Muscle spasms are the body’s way of preventing further damage. When they occur, the pain or discomfort may not feel like a prevention technique. It may feel like the body is morphing into putty. Here are some methods to treat spasms.

Instructions

    • 1

Avoid repetitive strain. One of the main causes of spasms is repeated overexertion of major muscle groups. Whenever the body has to perform a task that it is not used to performing, a muscle spasm may occur. This applies to workouts as well. Gauge how much weight is being lifted and decrease weight if pain occurs during the lift. Always wait 48 hours before weight training on a major muscle group.

    • 2

See a doctor. Muscle spasms are no joke. They can occur in mild and serious episodes. It is always prudent to see a physician when a spasm occurs repeatedly for more than 24 to 48 hours. Medication may be needed to relax the muscle.

    • 3

Buy a firm mattress. Specifically, muscles in the back and legs need hard surfaces to protect them in order to prevent further spasms. A firm mattress and lots of rest may be all the body needs to recuperate from a series of spasms.

    • 4

Apply ice to the muscle area immediately. Wrap the ice in a towel to avoid direct contact and leave on for 15 minutes and off for 10 minutes. Repeat this exercise two to three times.

    • 5

Use heat after 48 hours to increase blood flow. Applying heat to a spasm immediately may increase inflammation and worsen the spasm. Waiting for a sufficient time to pass will allow the heat to be beneficial in preventing further spasms.
