How to Paint Pottery Outside the Lines

  1. Step 1

Construct a design template. Add a narrative illustration to the pottery. The fluidity of the art will draw the observer away from the lines of the pottery to the spectrum of the progressive shapes, pictorials, and designs.

  2. Step 2

Use a stencil to airbrush large designs or customized word art onto the pottery. Consider staggering each letter or manipulating the scale of each shape. For example, paint a large heart around one side of the piece. Blur and manipulate the shape of the heart to inspire curiosity.

  3. Step 3

Paint exaggerated calligraphy art onto the pottery. Ignore the lines of the pottery to focus on the exaggerration of each calligraphy letter. Try bold, striking, aggressive strokes that bring the eye outward. For example, move the eye away from the line of the pottery to the overall art of the piece.

  4. Step 4

Paint the pottery one solid color. Use a base color to infuse the pottery with color. For added creativity, swivel a line across the individual lines of the pottery.

  5. Step 5

Paint multiple layers to minimize the lines of the pottery. Apply broad strokes that blur the pottery to a smooth finish. Let stand until dry. Add additional collage art, jewels or fabrics for greater innovation and creativity.
