Instructions

  1. How to Tie a Nail Knot

    • 1

Hold the end of the fly line, and the leader so the bitter ends overlap by a few inches.

    • 2

Insert a tube that is about the same size as the fly line, between them.

    • 3
Form two loops at each end of the wraps by crossing the line over itself, then slide it through the tube.

Form one loop in the line above the fly line as you begin to form five wraps around the tube, and fly line. Then form another loop at the end of the wraps. This will leave two loops of backing sticking out from each end of the wraps. These loops are very important, as they will help hold the knot as it is snugged down.

    • 4

Slide the line through the tube, and as you begin to snug the line tight, keep the two loops on each side of the wraps from sliding under the wraps, by holding them with your thumb or forefinger.

    • 5

Snug the entire knot tight, keeping the fly line steady, and the wraps will tighten perfectly around the fly line. The loops on each side of the wraps will tighten into the knot and hold.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keeping the loops from falling under the wraps is very important. Hold these with a thumb or forefinger.

  • If you let the loops slide under the wraps, your knot will not hold.
