  • Different treatment options
  • Pain relief

    Help for Dealing with Whiplash

  1. Step 1

Take medicine: Your doctor may prescribe a muscle relaxant. These generally cause drowsiness, so you should not drive or operate heavy machinery when taking such medications.

  2. Step 2

Wear a cervical collar, but it should only be worn for a designated amount of time since it may actually impede the healing process. The purpose of a cervical collar is to limit neck movement, so that no further damage occurs.

  3. Step 3

Apply heat: A heating pad may help ease some of the pain and discomfort you are experiencing due to whiplash. Caution should be used with an electrical heating pad to avoid the risk of serious burns.

  4. Step 4

Rub the injured area: Over-the-counter analgesic cremes, such as Ben Gay, may help with pain and stiffness. Rubbing it into the affected area generally causes the creme to "heat up," bringing temporary relief. Be careful not to get it in your eyes

  5. Step 5

See a chiropractor. Chiropractic medicine has successfully aided many people who suffered from whiplash because it helps get the spine and neck joints back into proper alignment.

  6. Step 6

Make an appointment with a licensed, certified massage therapist. Massage therapy can help release tension in your neck muscles, improve movement and ease pain.

  7. Step 7

Try acupuncture treatments. With just one to three sessions, your whiplash symptoms can be eased, even cleared up. Make sure you go to a licensed, board-certified practitioner.

  8. Step 8

Get rest. Rest can be very effective in helping diminish pain from your whiplash symptoms. Make sure you are in a comfortable bed and that your environment is conducive to sleep.
