How to Treat Optic Glioma
Optic gliomas are tumors that develop in the vicinity of the patient's eye, either in the optic nerves or the optic chasm. Optic gliomas are rare and can affect sight, eyeball movement and the appearance of the eye. Treatment can be difficult and requires a visit to the doctor.

Go to the doctor and explain your symptoms. Symptoms of optic glioma may include one or both eyes bulging outward, loss of vision and having to squint to see, involuntary movement of the eyes, loss of peripheral vision or blindness. Your doctor will know what tests you will need in order to determine if you have optic glioma. Usually an MRI of the head is involved to determine the exact location of the tumor.

Once the tumor is located, treatment will be discussed. Either the tumor will have to be surgically removed or radiation therapy will be recommended.

If you opt for surgery, which can be very successful, the entire tumor will be removed to alleviate the pressure in the eye area. After recovery from surgery, symptoms usually cease.

If you opt instead for radiation therapy, you may be given Proton Radiation Therapy. Corticosteroids are usually administered to alleviate swelling. Chemotherapy may also be an option, especially for young children with optic glioma.

Make sure to get plenty of rest and take care of yourself. Although optic glioma is a rare disease, it is possible to treat.
