How to Catch Sea Trout on a Fly Rod

  1. Step 1

Locate a decent section of water to catch sea trout. They hang out near jetties, in the surf, inlets and flats.

  2. Step 2

Scan the water for areas where sea trout like to hide. They usually can be found near drop offs, tidal areas, or in sections where fast and slow water meet. Any area where there is a quick transition between deep and shallow water is also good.

  3. Step 3

Cast your fly across the transition and draw it from deep to shallow water, or slow to fast. Use a quick twitching motion to imitate a wounded minnow, or a slower retrieve if you are using a crab or shrimp.

  4. Step 4

When you feel a strike, wait a moment, and let the sea trout take the bait before you set your hook.

  5. Step 5

Continue to search for more sea trout on your fly, and approach any section of water where you think there are trout, with caution.

Tips & Warnings
  • Match your flies to colors that the fish will see. If the water is muddy, using silver flies is best. When it is clear, colored flies will work better. Also, locate pools or deep areas in the water where Sea Trout are likely to hide and cast to these pools every so often.
  • Sea Trout can spook easily, so always wade carefully. sea trout are more active at night, but be careful if you fish at night, it is dangerous and requires extra precautions.
