Push the file. As you begin to file your piece, hold the half round tool at an angle and push it forward lengthwise. Continue this movement as you file your sculpture with the tool.

Use even pressure. Because your sculpture may be delicate, make sure you apply even pressure to your piece as you advance the file. This will keep the tool from filing too much or too little in different areas.

Lift the file. Although you will apply pressure to the fill as you move it forward, lift the tool before returning to your original stop and moving the tool forward once again. This will prevent the half round file from becoming dull.

Wipe with a brush. Keep a wire brush near you while you work. You will use this brush to clean the file as the shaving build up on the tool.
