How to Use Google Notebooks for Research

Google Notebook is a free tool created by Google which allows you to collect, save and organize information that you find through surfing the Internet. It is very helpful to use for researching for information and the information has the ability to be shared with other users. Google Notebook is like a large notepad allows the user to write notes, clip images, website links, and text while searching online.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Visit Google Notebook at http://www.google.com/notebook and create a free account.

  2. Step 2

    Google has a Firefox browser extension that allows for you to select text when you right click your mouse, and select “note this to notebook” and it will go automatically to Google Notebook.

  3. Step 3

    On the left side of the site, choose create Notebook, label the notebook that you would like to be.

  4. Step 4

    To add a section header, choose “New Note”, and under that it will say “type, paste, or add section". Choose “Add section” and label it.

  5. Step 5

    To share a particular notebook, click on Sharing Option on the right side of the site. You can add people by their email addresses and it will allow them to view and edit the notebook. There is a secondary option to publish the notebook and it will be made into a public web page.

  6. Step 6

    To filter the notes, go to the “ Sort & File” section, and can choose the following options such as: Sort by date, sort by label, show all notes, show unlabeled notes, and show notes with labels.

  7. Step 7

    At the bottom of the notes section, there is the ability to leave a comment and add labels to the note.

  8. Step 8

    To sort the notebooks, go to the left side of the site, click on Sort, and choose to sort by date or by A-Z.

  9. Step 9

    To edit labels, go to the bottom left side of the site and click on edit to change the name or remove the label.

  10. Step 10

    To export the notes, there are several options such as Google Docs, export as a html web page, and can also print out the notes. This can found through the Tools option or on the bottom on the site and select from there.

  11. Step 11

    To search for particular notes, enter the keywords, and click on the search my notes button to complete the process.

Tips & Warnings
  • Whenever you make a note it will automatically save it within a few seconds however, you can choose to click on the save button to save the note.
