Look at your options. Try and think of some ways you can earn money this summer. Sit down with a pen and pad of paper and start listing them. Look at the activities you have planned for the summer and make sure you can schedule your work around them. You don’t want to take on a job and not be able to perform due to schedule conflicts.

The babysitter. Do you like watching kids? Put up flyers at your local college, library, or in your church building letting people know you are willing to baby-sit during the summer time. You can also let friends and family know you are willing to baby-sit their kids this summer if they are interested. If they ask you to watch their kids, make sure you are punctual and make it a goal to leave the house a little cleaner than when you first arrived. Parents love that and you increase your chances of being asked to come back!

The lemonade stand. Set up a little stand on the corner or out in front of your house. You could try selling lemonade, brownies, cookies, or even flowers. Get some cardboard and write down the name of what you are selling and how much you are charging. Put a tablecloth over your table and tape the sign to the front of your table, so people passing by can see what you are selling and decide if they want to pull over.

Mow lawns. You can set up a little lawn care business this summer with your buddies. Create some flyers advertising your venture and hand them out to your neighbors, family, and friends. You can mow lawns, rake leaves, and pull weeds. If you do a good job and people notice it, they may approach you and ask you to take care of their lawns.

Walk the dogs. You can set up a little business walking dogs around the neighborhood. Create flyers and hand them out to your neighbors, family, and friends. Don’t overdo it. Try to limit it to walking one or two dogs at a time (i.e. two dogs if they live together). You don’t want to end up spending your earnings to replace a dog you’ve lost.

Get a job in a fast food restaurant or grocery store. Find out from your employer or your school if you need a special permit to work there. A lot of times, you’ll need to take a class and have a Food Handler’s Permit to work in a restaurant if you are under a certain age.

The garage sale. If your parents are putting together a garage sale, go through your clothes, toys, and books and see if there is anything you don’t use anymore that you’d like to sell. Let your parents know before you put it out on the lawn for someone to purchase! It’s nice to be able to clean your room up and make money at the same time.

Try to save some of the money you earn. It’s easy to spend money you aren’t use to having, so make it a conscious effort to put some away in savings. Have fun this summer and remember to be reliable and responsible with whatever way you decide to earn money!

Tips & Warnings

  • Don’t sit back and wait for people to come to you. Create flyers and hand them out to your neighbors, family, and friends!

  • Don’t do more than you can handle. Keep in mind the activities you already have planned for the summer and if you decide to take a job in a restaurant or grocery store, let your employer know beforehand.
