How to Create Unique Planters

It is just too easy to find items to make creative and unique planters to place throughout your yard.

• potting soil
• your imagination!

1. 

   Look around your home; check your attic, garage and closets for items that could be made into planters.Yard sales can be an excellent source of inexpensive items that can be used.

2. 

   Use good potting soil that has added fertilizer; this will help keep the plants healthy and in bloom.Make sure whatever you use has drainage holes.

3. 

   Water daily! You may want to add more fertilizer after a month or so. If the plants look stressed or pale, they probably need it.

Tips & Warnings

• Ideas for unique planters:

• old ice skates, planted with bright blue lobelia, strung together and hung over a railing

• birds nests planted with allysum and slightly hidden in a shady spot

• baskets; line with newspaper and add lots of blooming marigolds for a sunny spot, or impatients or begonias for shadier locations

• Prescription bottles filled with small herbs, like thyme or lavender (drill holes in bottom!)

• Baby shoes

• old lunch boxes

• coffee cans

• toys - lego blocks, rubber duckies, tea sets...

• old purses (again, line with newspaper)

• old spatterware coffeepots (drill holes in bottom)

• Boots, singles or pairs - great at the front door step!

• Be prepared to use your drill-everything must have holes for drainage!

• Make sure the plants have some room for growing roots.

• Pay attention to the plant's needs for sun or shade.
