Fighting with your mate can be very stressful. If not dealt with properly, fights can cause deep rooted bitterness and a decline in the health of your relationship. You chose your mate because you wanted to spend the rest of your life with him. Your dream was a life of joy, adventure and happiness with her. Fighting with your mate can definitely hinder that dream. All couples fight occasionally, but it's how we deal with those fights that make the difference in a healthy relationship. Here are a few tips to help you stop a fight with your mate before it gets out of control.

From Quick Guide: Family Fights
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose to forgive. Choose to forgive him for everything you feel he has done to hurt you. Usually an argument brings emotions and memories of past incidents to mind. Forgiveness is a choice. Some of the negative emotions may remain, but by choosing to forgive you have started the process of neutralizing the situation.

  2. Step 2

Speak softly and calmly. In order to stop a fight with your mate you will need to resist the urge to raise your voice or yell. Stop, think, and make a conscience decision to speak softly. It's not easy, but this is one of the best ways to stop a fight with your mate.

  3. Step 3

Express something positive. When it becomes obvious a fight is brewing, instead of saying the first negative thing that comes to mind, try to say something positive. It's usually very difficult to find something positive to say when you're on the verge of a fight, but if nothing else comes to mind simply say, "I love you."

  4. Step 4

Walk away. Sometimes leaving the room is the only way to stop a fight with your mate. Say calmly to your mate, "Honey, I need to walk away for a minute before things get out of hand. Please forgive me, I love you." This will give both of you time to calm down.

  5. Step 5

Think about why you love your mate. After walking away, begin to meditate or think about your mate's positive attributes. This might be difficult in the heat of the moment, but if you think about why you fell in love with her in the first place, the reasons for your fight may not seem so important.

  6. Step 6

Go back and make up. After you've both had a few moments to cool down, return to your mate. Approach him with a loving attitude, a hug and an apology. Your mate may still be resistant, but keep reassuring her that you love her. Controlling an argument is never easy, but the rewards will be great if you can stop a fight with your mate. Remember, making up is the best part!

Tips & Warnings
  • These tips may sound easy, but when you're in the middle of a fight they can be very difficult to apply. You must control your ego and pride in order to stop a fight with your mate. Putting your mate's needs above your own is the best way to bringing peace in your relationship.
