  1. How to Sew a Dart

    • 1

If using a sewing pattern, the dart is drawn out on the pattern paper. Lay the pattern on top of your fabric, with the fabric right side up.

    • 2

The dart should be marked on the pattern paper with dots. There should be two points where the dart starts at the wide end, two in the middle, and one at the point. Mark these points with pins or chalk.

    • 3

Now match up the dots. (the wide end with the wide end, middle dot with the other middle dot, gradually coming to a point.) The dart should resemble the shape of a triangle. The bulk should be toward the wrong side of the fabric.

    • 4

Secure the dart in place, preferably using tailors tacks, but pins work as well.

    • 5

Now, sew the dart in place. Start at the wide end and backstitch.

    • 6

Sew a straight line to the point. Sew straight off the edge and DO NOT backstitch here.

    • 7

Cut a long string tail. Take the two pieces of string and tie a knot to secure the stitch.

    • 8

For best results, press the dart using a pressing ham.
