Hamsters love to burrow!

A hamster's habitat must be secure, safe, and enjoyable for your pet. To make it as close to his natural habitat as possible, you will need to give him a good sized cage, plenty of bedding, and lots of wooden chew toys. In the wild, hamsters live in burrows, which have a cooler temperature and higher humidity level. They also tend to live in brushy areas, so that is what you want to try to emulate with the habitat you build your hamster.

Things You'll Need:

  • Aquarium or Cage
  • Recycled Paper litter
  • Tunnels
  • Wooden Chew Sticks

How to Make a Hamster's Natural Habitat

  1. Step 1

Choose a wire, plastic or glass cage for your hamster. The wire cage will give your hamster the best ventilation, but be careful the bars aren't too far apart, or he might escape. Some plastic cages have wire parts to them, allowing for good ventilation, but also keeping the hamster secured. Glass cages are somewhat easier to care for, and the least likely for the hamster to escape from, but also the least ventilated.

  2. Step 2

Decide which type of bedding to use in the hamster habitat. A good choice is a fluffy bedding made from recycled paper and cardboard. This allows plenty of burrowing space for the hamster. You could also use shredded newspaper, as hamsters love to burrow and chew on this.

  3. Step 3

Place some wooden chew toys in the cage. This will help the hamster keep his teeth from becoming too sharp, and also keep him from becoming bored.

  4. Step 4

Add a couple tunnels or toilet paper tubes to the habitat. Hamsters love to chew on these as well as play in them. They are one of the closest additions to a hamster habitat that the hamster would have in its natural environment.

  5. Step 5

Clean the hamster habitat daily, getting rid of the wet litter, and adding some new dry litter if needed. Once a week you should completely empty, wash, and refill the cage so the hamster doesn't get ill.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always clean out wet bedding daily.
  • Completely wash and dry the entire cage once a week, and refill it with fresh litter.
  • Change the hamsters toys every so often to keep the hamster from getting bored.
  • Don't use cedar or pine bedding for hamsters. The fumes from these wood chips are very bad for the animal's respiratory tract.
  • Be sure to keep the temperature comfortable for the hamster. Ideally between about 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
