Strawberries love full sun and plenty of moisture and they also spread quite easily. It is possible to get them started in a small space such as a child's wading pool with very little difficulty. It is very easy to plant strawberries In such an unlikely place as a plastic wading pool, and the plants are excessively self-sowing so they will soon outgrow the pool itself and spread to your lawn.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Strawberry plants
  • An old wading pool
  • Hammer and nail
  • Shovel

How to Grow a Strawberry Garden in a Wading Pool

Step1
Puncture the bottom of an old wading pool in several places with a hammer and a nail to ensure good drainage.
Step2
Dig a hole the same size, shape and depth of the pool. This can be done by turning the pool upside-down in the correct spot and digging closely around the perimeter. Then remove the pool and continue digging within the circle you have made.
Step3
Place the pool into the hole and fill in the spaces around the edges. Shovel the left-over dirt into the inside of the pool. Dump in mulch, manure or commercial fertilizer.
Step4
Dig up some wild strawberries or buy some domestic specimens. Use a small trowel to create little holes to plant them in.
Step5
Plant your strawberries inside the wading pool garden, and make sure you give the plants a good soaking with the garden hose. The excess water will drain out the bottom so you don't have to worry about over watering.

Tips & Warnings

  • Allow the plants to spread as they will and they will soon completely fill the wading pool, and probably half your yard as well. Simply pull out any plants you do not want, or lay a thick layer of pebbles and rocks around the pool to prevent the spread of the plants.
  • Be careful when punching holes in the wading pool. It is easy for the nail to slip and punch into your hand rather than the plastic.
  • Swing the hammer carefully to be sure you don't hit your own finger.
