How to Make A Child's Tutu
A homemade tutu is guaranteed to be your child's new favorite dress up costume with these easy-to-follow directions. Show off your child's personality by customizing this no-sew tutu with ribbon streamers, satin waistbands or even by mixing and matching the tulle colors. By being creative, a tutu under your child's dress can add volume and new life to an old dress, the perfect blue tutu can double as your daughter's Cinderella ball gown and a stiff tutu can transform your daughter into a little ballerina.
Things You'll Need
- 6 to 10 yards of tulle (depends on size of waist)
- 20-28 Inches ribbon (med. width works best)
- Marker
- Measuring Tape
- Scissors
Instructions
-
-
1
Measure child's waist and add an inch to each end. Mark with a marker on each end.
-
2
Measure child from waist to desired length of tutu. Double this measurement and cut tulle to measured length.
-
-
3
Lay tulle flat out on a table and cut into approximately 6 inch wide strips.
-
4
Starting in the middle of your ribbon, fold a strip of tulle in half over ribbon and tie in a knot. Your strip should now be attached to the ribbon.
-
5
Repeat this process until you have tied enough tulle strips to fill entire ribbon to end marks on each side.
-
6
Tie tutu around child's waist with a bow. If there is too much extra ribbon, trim slightly.

You can save a step by buying tulle in 6 inch wide, 25 yard long spools! I've found them in all kinds of colors for as little as $2.99 at Hobby Lobby.
