1
Buy a tape measure. Make sure you get one that is big enough for your needs. These tape measures come in all sizes and some can measure up to 120 feet. Make sure that your tape measure comes with a locking mechanism so you don't have to hold it with your fingers.
-
2
Get out the wood or object you want to measure. Match the edges of the tape measure with the thing you want to measure. That is your starting point.
-
-
3
Stretch the tape measure out until you get to the end of the thing you want to measure. Click the locking mechanism in to place. If you are measuring a board because you want to cut off the excess wood, pull out your tape measure until you reach the designated feet and inches. Then, make a pencil mark where you need to cut.
-
4
Read the tape measure. Tape measures read exactly the same as rulers; each inch is marked and the indications for each foot is highlighted on most measuring tapes. In between each inch are little markings. Each one stands for 1/16 of an inch. That helps builders get precise measurements.
-
5
Release the tape measure's button, where the locking mechanism is, to draw the tape measure back in to the case automatically.
