  1. How To Remove Thorns Off Roses Safely

    • 1

Place several sheets of paper towel underneath where you will be removing the thorns. Make sure that the paper towels are in a layer of at least two or three high. Separate all of the roses so that they are laid out one by one. If you choose to wear gardening gloves when you are taking off the thorns, put them on now.

    • 2

Pick out a stem to start with. Start at the bottom of the stem to begin cutting off the thorns. As you work your way up you can easily hold onto the part of the stem that already has the thorns cut off of it. Place your fingers of your hand that you're not going to be holding the nail clippers with on the bottom of the stem in between the thorns that you have yet to cut.

    • 3

Holding the nail clippers in the hand that you're most comfortable with, place half of the base of the first thorn that you're starting with halfway into the nail clippers. When you successfully cut the first half of the base of the thorn, go to the other side of that thorn and use the nail clippers to cut the remaining half. The thorns should come off quite easily. The reason to only do half a thorn at a time is because the base of a thorn could be thick and many times it will not fit completely into the nail clippers.

    • 4

Cut off the thorns one by one and try to get them on one pile on the paper towels, so when you pick the towels up to throw them out, you won't accidentally pinch yourself with the thorns that are in there. When you have worked your way up to cutting off all of the thorns, throw out the paper towels that you have used.

    • 5

Check the stems to make sure that all of the thorns are removed, as you are putting the flowers into the vase.

Tips & Warnings

  • Should you prick yourself with a thorn, make sure to rinse it out well and put peroxide on it.
