Shanghai Rummy is an easy game to learn, fun to play, and provides hours of entertainment. It is based on standard Rummy rules with a few twists.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Standard deck of playing cards
  • Two players
  • An extra deck of cards for more than two players
  1. Step 1

Deal 7 cards to each player. Place the remaining cards in the center of the table as a draw deck and turn over the top card to start a discard pile.

  2. Step 2

The players' turns are as follows: Draw a card, play a set (if possible), discard a card. A player can draw from either the draw pile or the top card of the discard pile. Each player must discard to end his or her turn.

  3. Step 3

The first player to get rid of all his or her cards wins the hand, provided they are able to discard one card to end their turn. The other players then total up how many cards they have in their hand and how many are on the table using these point totals: cards 2 through 9 are worth 5 points, 10 through King are worth 10 points, and the Aces are worth 15. After 10 hands, the game is over, and the player with the fewest points wins.

  4. Step 4

Each hand has a different target set that players must complete. Players must complete the sets in order. Hand 1: 2 sets of 3Hand 2: 4 card straightHand 3: 4 card straight, and a set of 3Hand 4: 5 card straightHand 5: 4 card straight flushHand 6: 4 card straight flush and a set of 3Hand 7: 5 card straight flushHand 8: 5 card straight flush, set of 3Hand 9: 7 card straight, set of 3Hand 10: 7 card straight flush and two sets of 3

  5. Step 5

Each hand, players are allowed a certain number of gimme plays. A gimme is played when a player discards a card, and another player can take it right away, whether it is their turn or not. On hands 1 through 7, each player gets three gimme plays. On hands 8 through 10, four per hand are allowed. Gimme plays are cumulative, meaning a player can save them up from hand to hand.

Tips & Warnings
  • Change things around for more variety in this game. You can change the required sets, gimme rules, or anything at all
  • House rules override any other rules.
  • It's a game. Don't make it too serious.
