Betting on sports can be entertaining, nerve-racking and exhilarating. Before you place your bets, however, there are a few things you should consider.
Decide how much money you can afford to lose, and only bet that amount. You don’t want to cause yourself financial hardship by betting away your paycheck.
Step2
Choose which sport you want to bet on; hockey, football, baseball, basketball or horse racing. Different states have different regulations, so make sure you stay on the legal side of the line.
Step3
Study the situation and calculate the odds. You will want to take into consideration the past performance of the team or horse you are betting on, the weather, location, and possible injuries.
Step4
Place your bet with the appropriate party. Sport betting is severely restricted in the US, so unless you live in Nevada you may have to find a way to bet through a Nevada-based sports book. Otherwise you are basically limited to betting with friends to stay legal.
Step5
Consider pari-mutuel betting if you live in a state that allows gambling on racing events. Many casinos are leaning towards allowing race bets and you can bet on races outside your state.
Tips & Warnings
While sports betting may seem like an attractive way to make money, remember that it is just a gamble--don’t expect it to pay your bills.
Online betting is technically illegal, although people are rarely prosecuted for it. The greater concern is the addictive nature of online betting.
