Things You'll Need:
- Bicycle
- Safety helmet
- Cycling gloves
- Comfortable clothing
- Water bottle
- Sun block
- U-lock
- Emergency bike repair kit
- Extra inner tube
-
Step 1
Make sure there are appropriate side roads to your work before investing in a bicycle. Many places prohibit bicycling on interstates. Learn the rules of the road for cyclists.
-
Step 2
Purchase a bike that gives you the speed of a road bike with the comfort of a mountain bike. Look for one that is agile, light and allows you to remain in a comfortable upright position. If you are going to ride in the dark, make sure the bike has a white light in front and a red light in back. Consider getting a blinking light so you can be seen further away.
-
Step 3
Wear comfortable clothing while cycling. Put an elastic band around the right leg on longer pants to keep it from getting caught in the chain ring. Protect exposed skin with sun block. Carry a water bottle.
-
Step 4
Drive the cycling route in your car to familiarize yourself with it. Take a practice ride on a day off, when you’re not rushed, in order to time the ride and discover any obstacles.
-
Step 5
Secure your bike at work. Ask your employer to install a bike rack and secure your bike with a U-lock; be sure to lock the frame along with the front tire. Some business will allow employees to bring their bikes into the building for protection.
-
Step 6
Keep deodorant or products like Rocket Shower, by 10 Nine 8, which you spray on and wipe off. Pull longer hair in a pony tail for the ride. At work, wet a comb and put it up fresh. Ladies, wear waterproof makeup and keep extra makeup at work.
