One of the most important things you can do for your family is teach money management to children. Children today face many uncertainties in life. Teaching proper money management from an early age will help them through many of those uncertain moments – keep reading to learn how you can give this valuable lesson to your children.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Games
  • Books on money management (for children)
  • Savings account for child

Step1
Teach money management to children by managing your own finances well. Setting a good example is a hard act to ignore when it comes to things such as proper money management skills. If you want your children to know how to make the right decisions when managing their money, let them see you making those same decisions while managing yours.
Step2
Teach money management to children by managing your own finances well. Setting a good example is a hard act to ignore when it comes to things such as proper money management skills. If you want your children to know how to make the right decisions when managing their money, let them see you making those same decisions while managing yours.
Step3
Talk with your children about finances. If you explain to them why you are making the decisions you make about money and tell them about the lessons you've learned along the way your children will be able to learn from your mistakes without needing to make some of their own. This by no means indicates that you shouldn't allow them the opportunity to make mistakes only that if you are open with them, they are less likely to repeat some of your mistakes.
Step4
Give them the opportunity to manage their own money to a small degree. Establish an allowance and let them make decisions about saving, spending, and investing that money. Experience is the best teacher. If you allow them to begin managing money at an early age (to a small and age appropriate degree of course) you will perhaps prevent some of the more costly mistakes made by those who learn this important skill a little too late (or not at all).
Step5
Open a savings account for your child and let him watch it grow. As he sees the growth, the impact of interest, and what happens over time to his monthly contribution he will become more excited about saving. Especially if he has goals for the money he's setting aside each month. Excitement and anticipation are excellent tools to use to teach money management to children.

Tips & Warnings

  • Allow children to play computer games or board games that teach them about money management for added lessons and positive reinforcement. Better yet, play the games along with them.
  • Read books that teach money management to children with your children so that you can both learn important lessons about managing money.
