Step 1
Plan your mode of transportation. If you are flying, you will be landing at the Piedmont Triad International Airport, a thirty minute drive from Winston-Salem. It is very easy to get a taxi into town, and if you are renting a car, it's just as easy to find yourself. If you are driving, the best way to get into town is by taking I-40.
-
Step 2
Find a place to stay. The options are limitless as far as accommodation is concerned in Winston-Salem. There are inexpensive motels spread throughout the city, from the Wake Forest area, all the way to downtown and beyond. A quick search in cyberspace will turn up many options.
-
Step 3
Sightsee at points of interest. One of the most fascinating areas of town is Old Salem. This is a part original and part reconstructed area of settlement houses from the mid to late 19th century. It is situated on the spot where the town of Salem was founded and the architecture is breathtaking. There are daily demonstrations of candlemaking and bakeries and restaurants serving Moravian delicacies. Downtown Winston-Salem is also a fantastic area to take an afternoon stroll. The brick paved streets and eclectic shops have all the amenities of a big city, without the hustle and bustle.
-
Step 4
Shop all over town. As mentioned before, the downtown area has a metropolitan feel, and that translates to its shopping. Plenty of great places for souvenirs and clothing abound. Also, the Hanes Mall has everything you'd ever need from a major shopping mall. It is easy to find, right off of Silas Creek Parkway.
-
Step 5
Eat North Carolina Style Barbecue. The great vinegar-based pulled pork of North Carolina is featured on many menus in Winston-Salem, and it's something that any barbecue aficionado must try. Most places are informal and inexpensive, but pack in a lot of taste for the money. One of the best examples is Mr. Barbecue on Peter's Creek Parkway.
