Paint Flower Designs on a Child's Fingernails

Most women have succumbed to the seduction of elaborately painted fingernails at some point in their lives. Even if you do not usually wear nail polish at all, you probably remember how pampered you felt as the manicurist painted beautiful designs on your fingernails. A great way to bond with your daughter is to replicate this experience at home--complete with flower designs on her own little fingers. You will both have fun and a fabulous time while creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Things You'll Need

  • Bright nail polish (a solid red or pink works best)
  • White nail polish
  • Toothpicks
  • Clear top coat
  • Green nail polish
  • Plastic plate

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your child's hands thoroughly. Nail polish always looks better when the nails underneath are clean.

    • 2

Paint on the bright lower layer. If you can still see the fingernail underneath the first coat, then add a second.

    • 3

Dry the nails for five minutes. You can wave your hands in the air, blow on your nails or just sit still and enjoy a movie or each other's company.

    • 4

Place a small dot of white nail polish in the center of the pinky nail. On very small girls, this nail may not have enough room for a flower. If it is too small, keep moving around the hand until you reach a nail that has enough room for a full flower.

    • 5

Dab a toothpick in the center of the white dot. It will pick up some white nail polish.

    • 6

Use the toothpick to create five smaller dots around the bigger dot. These are the petals of the flower. You can do this on every fingernail that is big enough, or you may want to just decorate one or two on each hand.

    • 7

Place a small blob of green nail polish on the plastic plate. This should be a small blob, but bigger than the flower centers.

    • 8

Dip another toothpick in the green polish. It will pick up some of the green polish.

    • 9

Use the toothpick to make a green "V" underneath the white flowers. This "V" forms the flower's leaves.

    • 10

Coat all the nails with the clear topcoat. This will protect the design and make fingernails bright and shiny.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to paint your nails in a well ventilated area to avoid inhaling toxic nail polish fumes.

  • Consider using organic or non-toxic nail polishes.

  • Remind the child not to bite her fingernails. Ingesting traditional nail polish can be dangerous.
