Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plastic or glass bowl
  • Applicator brush or bottle
  • Permanent hair color (this should be no lighter or darker than 2 shades)
  • Hydrogen peroxide or Cream Developer
  • Comb
  • Towel
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Petroleum Jelly

How to process color for virgin hair

  1. Step 1

Begin by performing a strand test. This is done by mixing the color, applying a small amount to an unnoticeable strand under the hair, and allowing it to process. Keep track of the time it takes for the test strand to achieve the proper color. Spray water on the test strand to remove the hair coloring. Then section hair into 4 panels. The front half of your head should be 2 panels and the back half should be 2 panels. Place a thin layer of petroleum around the hair line making sure you do not get it on the root or shaft of the hair. Place the rubber gloves on your hands.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the hair coloring using the directions on the package in either a bowl or an application bottle. Begin by parting off 1/4" subsections of one panel. You will begin in the temple areas of the head or one or the front panels first. If using an applicator bottle, the tip of the bottle works well to help part the hair. Lift the 1/4 inch section and apply color to the mid shaft of the hair. Stay at least 1/2 inch away from the scalp and don't pull the color to the ends. Continue this until all hair is covered.

  3. Step 3

Process the hair according to the strand test results. If it took 15 minutes for the test strand to achieve the correct color, then only allow the color to process for 15 minutes and no longer. When hair is finished developing, apply color to the scalp. Pull the color through to the ends with a comb or simply through your gloved fingers. This step will assure the ends will not get darker than the rest of the hair.

  4. Step 4

Rinse lightly with lukewarm water. Massage color into a lather and rinse thoroughly until water runs clear out of hair. Remove any stains around hairline with shampoo or stain remover. Shampoo the hair and condition as you would normally do. Towel dry and style as usual.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you do not choose a color that is lighter or darker than 2 shades of your natural color. You can always go lighter or darker later 2 shades at a time. Wipe up any drips or spills of the hair color. It will stain anything it comes in contact with.
  • Do no over process your hair. It can burn it and in severe cases turn your hair to a gummy type gel and cause it to fall out.
