Instructions on Installing A Handicapped Bathtubs

1
Decide which type of tub you will want to install, and what type of door it will have. Some have a panel that swings out or in; others an electrically powered one that slides downward.
-
2
Demolish the existing tub. If you are planning to save a tile surround, just take off the row that meets the tub; otherwise rip it all out down to the studs. Pry the old tub loose, using a wood block as a fulcrum, and carry it out.

3
Make sure you have room for any electrical or venting, and reroute pipes if necessary. Unpack the new tub and measure twice to be certain everything will line up.
-
4
Set the new tub in place, and start hooking up the plumbing. While you have every thing taken apart is a good time for a plumber if anything looks rusted or worn. Make sure your tub is level, and shim if necessary.
-
5
Attach all the fixtures and tighten down all the connections (including the drain). Turn on the water and check for leaks. Put up any necessary bars or supports.

Tips & Warnings
If you decide to re-tile the surround, you can build the shelves and support bars in as you go for even more stability.
If you have any wood rot, now is the time to fix it. Once you get your tub in, you don’t want to have to tear it out.
