Instructions

    • 1

Gather up a bottle that can be sealed with a cork. You can use any bottle, but you want one that someone could see a message was in. If the bottle is super dark a person might just pick the bottle up and throw it in a trash can.

    • 2

Clean your bottle. Wash your bottle out with soap and water. You are going to have to let your bottle air dry for a few hours before you can use it.

    • 3

Write a message. Make the message say anything you want. If you want the finder to contact you make sure you use a post office box so that you do not give away your home address. Remember a stranger is going to pick up the bottle and that stranger could turn out to be a bad guy who might not have good intentions.

    • 4

Roll your message up and tie it with a string. If you don't tie it, it will be difficult for the finder to get the message out as the message will unfold when you place it inside the bottle. Slide your message inside the bottle and put a cork in it.

    • 5

Place your bottle is a plastic bag. Use a clear heavy duty bag that will be sure to keep the water out.

    • 6

Throw your bottle in to a moving stream or river. The ocean would just wash your bottle back and forth and you could end up with someone from the same town picking it up.

    • 7

Wait for your message to be found. Record the date you sent the message out and the date you receive an answer. It is possible that no one will ever get the message or that it might take a few years.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may want to find out if this is considered littering. If the wrong person finds your message you could get a fine.

  • Don't give away personal information in your message. This could be dangerous. You may use your first name, but skip your last. Use a P.O. box as suggested above and do not give out your phone number. Anyone can look up your address by searching your phone number.
