How to Lay a Gravel Bed

If you do not want the maintenance that comes with lawns, and you cannot afford concrete or pavers, an alternative to giving your garden interesting color and architecture is by using gravel. Although gravels are not suitable for patios, they great for planting beds; blending beautifully with different plants. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Assorted gravel types and colors
  • Shovel
  • Black polythene or mulching sheet
  • Rake
  • Assorted plants

Instructions

    • 1

      Dig the area using a shovel to a depth of about two inches.

      Level the ground.

    • 3

      Lay the mulching sheet or heavy-duty black polythene. Overlap them every two inches.

    • 4

      Add gravel and use a rake to spread them. For added interest use different colored gravel in each section or bed.

      Add plants by drawing the gravel back from the area you will place your plant and then puncture or slit open the polythene or mulching sheet underneath. Then plant as you normally would.

      Tap the soil and make sure that it is firm around the base of the plant.

      Pull back the mulching sheet or polythene to cover the base of the plant leaving enough space to let the plant breath and get enough water.

      Re-cover it with gravel.
