How to Deal with Tantrums at the Store
All parents of small children know the joys of temper tantrums. They are screaming, crying, kicking, hitting spells, that usually occur when a child is over tired or over indulged. Temper tantrums usually happen at home, but they can happen in public just as easily. If you are at a store and your toddler throws a tantrum, what do you do? This article will take you step by step through the process every parent should take with their children if they experience a temper tantrum in a store. At some point, it happens to every parent.

1
Ignore your child's demanding. If your child knows she has your attention, she has accomplished her first task. At the first sign of a tantrum, don't react to your child's behavior. Keep her and others around her safe, but don't give in.
-
2
Let your child know the behavior is unacceptable and tell her she will be removed from the store if she continues to scream. This step usually happens within four to five minutes of the beginning of the tantrum.

3
Pick up your child and take him into a bathroom or another private location. You will feel less embarrassed if you take your child away from as many ears and eyes as possible. Take your child to a more private location to let him get the kicking and screaming out of his system.

Tell him he can keep crying, but he will not get what he wants until he stops crying and behaves. While you are in the private location, let him know you will leave if his behavior continues. You can let him cry in the private store location for five minutes or so. Sometimes that is all he needs.

5
Leave the store. If five minutes have passed since you took your child to the restroom, leave. You can come back later when you have a babysitter or when your child is in a better mood. What's more, you told your child you would leave if she wasn't behaving. You are simply following through with your discipline.
