Set an Inlay with a Router
-
1
Make sure your router bit is centered in the router guide. The router bit diameter must be the same as the wall thickness of the inlay bushing.
-
2
Use a 7 in. base plate on your router. Also use the aligning pin in the chuck of the router with the 7/16 in. guide. Using the ring nut, fasten the 7/16" guide to the 7 in. base plate.

3
Place a 1/4 in. inlay bushing over the guide flange. Tighten the screw. Remove the aligning pin. Put a 1/4 in. spiral bit in your router using the chuck.
-
4
Draw a pattern of your project onto a piece of wood with a sharp pencil. Set the depth of cut on your router to just under the thickness of the inlay material.
-
5
Make sure the bushing is in place and start the router. For each design or inlay set into the wood, make sure to make a clean cavity with a smooth bottom.

Tips & Warnings
To set a router inlay, the bushing and bit must enter the work space up against the edge of the template. The precision of a router inlay kit means any deviation will ruin the inlay.
Try not to get any extra wood chips caught between the router bit and the bushing wall. This will prevent the cavity of your inlay from becoming smooth.
