How to Swim With Dolphins in Jamaica

Jamaica is such a fun island nation to visit. There are a lot of things to do, like swimming with the dolphins in Ocho Rios.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Swim suit
  • Swim shoes
  • Water proof camera
  • Sunscreen
  • Life jacket (provided by tour guide)
  1. Step 1

    Register with your concierge to sign up for the Dolphin Cove. They will pick you up at the hotel at 8:00 a.m. for your day at the Dolphin Cove. You can sign up for Beach Encounter, Deep water Encounter, Swim Encounter, Private Swims, or Trainer for the day.

  2. Step 2

    Get to feel and touch dolphins for your young children and non-swimmers with the Beach encounter. There you will have an orientation on the lifestyle of dolphins and you will wade into the water waist high in order to tough the dolphins, pet them be kissed by them and watch them do several stunts. Younger children will get a thrill out of this.

  3. Step 3

    Swim with them in the dolphin's lagoon. This one is suitable for children over the age of eight and lasts for around 35 to 40 minutes. You will be presented with an orientation of the dolphins lifestyle. You will wear a life jacket and go out into the water with the dolphin. The dolphins will kiss you, dance for you, allow you to hold their fin and shake and let you pet them.

  4. Step 4

    If you're more adventurous, sign up for the swim encounter. This encounter lets you know about the behaviors of the dolphins, you get to interact with the dolphin, he will kiss you, let you touch him, dance for you sing for you, shake your had and will either dorsal pull, foot push or allow you to belly ride with the dolphin.

  5. Step 5

    Perform like a trainer yourself for the day. Spend the entire day with the trainer and do everything that they do, Take an active role in the swimming with the dolphins, and see how their food and medication is prepared. This one allows you to sing with the dolphins, swim with them and be pushed by them. At the end of the day you will be given a test on what you learned and a certificate that you completed your course, a whistle and a photo album of your entire dolphin encounter.

  6. Step 6

    Swim privately with the dolphins instead of a group, just a maximum of two people and the trainer. Wear the life jacket that is given to you by the staff, learn about the lifestyle and behaviors of dolphins. Swim into deep water and interact with the dolphins. Let the dolphins kiss you, you will be able to pet them as they swim by, they will dance for you and sing for you. The dolphin will allow you to shake his hand (fin) and then they will give you a dorsal pull ride, or push you by your feet as you fly over the water or give you a belly ride.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wear plenty of sunscreen, it gets really hot, take breaks if you need them, do not venture out to deep into the water if you are not a strong swimmer, stay close to the trainer that is assigned to you.
