Step 1
Read the user guide that came with your camera. The guide explains all of the camera's features and labels each part of the camera to help you familiarize yourself with it’s processes and functions.

Turn the camera on. Go to the menu setting. Most digital cameras have a menu button you can press to take you to the camera’s menu.

Locate the setting for the timer. Some digital cameras have several timer options available. The self-timer allows you to set delays in increments from seconds to hours if you choose. The interval timer can be set in various increments as well. You may choose to set it to take a picture every 10 or 15 minutes or whichever time increment you prefer. Long exposure allows you to take time exposures in the time increment you set. Exposure count allows you to set the number of exposures to be taken within a set time frame. You may set the camera to take an exposure every three minutes or so depending on what you’re taking pictures of.

Step 4
Set your camera on a tripod or on a flat, level surface so you can get a view of the picture you want to take.

Press the shutter release button down halfway to lock in the focus and exposure. Look at your LCD screen viewfinder to make sure the picture is set to the focus you want. Next, press the shutter release button all the way down to activate the timer.
