Your team won't always be ahead at the half. If your team is down at halftime, there's no good reason why you should give up. The game is truly only half over. It's important to say the right things in the locker room before heading out for the second half of play. Here is how to motivate your team when they're losing at halftime.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Begin by telling your team what they're doing wrong. Obviously, if your team is losing at halftime, things aren't going as planned. Inform your players if they're not following the game plan or if they're making mental mistakes. Don't focus on the mistakes for too long during halftime but be sure to point them out. This will be your way of letting the players know what you don't want to see during the second half of play.
Step2
Inform your players of everything they've done well so far in the first half. After you've told your team about their mistakes, turn things around and praise them. Even if they've only done one thing well, tell your players about the good things that happened in the first half. This can be a starting point for turning the game around in the second half.
Step3
Tell your team why they're losing in the first half. Point out what the opposing team is doing and how they have the lead. By pointing out what they're doing right, your team will be better prepared to stop the success the opposing team is enjoying when the second half comes.
Step4
Make adjustments at the half and let your players know what they have to do differently. If your team is losing at halftime, it's probably because a portion of the original game plan isn't getting the job done. Tell your team about any changes to the game plan and why you're making those changes.
Step5
Remind your team about comebacks you've made in the past. Nothing motivates a team that is trailing like a story of a previous rally. Perhaps your team has come back from a deficit earlier in the season. Bring these games up during halftime and convince your players that it can and will happen again.
Step6
Tell your team about the weaknesses of your opponents. Once you've got your team thinking about a rally, let them know that the opposing team is not invincible. Mention any flaws in the opposing team that you noticed during the first half. Then tell your team how those flaws can be exploited. If your team believes they can come back, they will be more motivated to begin the second half.
Step7
End halftime strongly by yelling your last words of encouragement. You want your team to exit the locker room fired up after halftime. Bring your team together in a final huddle and loudly emphasize why you're going to rally to win the game. Act as if you believe even if you have doubts. If you believe, your team will believe.
