Cement roofing is actually one of the easiest forms of roofing to repair. They are also some of the most durable and lasting roof types available for use today. A cement roof is usually made up of tiles just like any other roofing style. They are resistant to weather, and can withstand very high winds, making them idea for placement around coastal areas where hurricanes and tornados are frequent. Another thing that makes a cement roof unique is the fact that they are great insulators of heat, keeping a house warm in winter and cool in summer. This project is for the repair of tiles hung with the hanger strips and nails method.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cement tiles like the ones already on your roof
  • Secure ladder
  • Non-slip shoes
  • Hammer
  • A pry bar
  • Pliers
  • A putty knife
  • Roof cement
  • Wedges
  • Copper nails
  • Hanger strips
  • Wet saw
  • Eye goggles
  • Thick gloves
  1. Step 1

Wearing the goggles and gloves, gently tap the broken tile with the hammer to break it apart. Avoid hitting any other tiles, as this will create more work for you.

  2. Step 2

Pull out the broken pieces of tile, and throw away. Sweep the area clean with your hand or a small brush. Be gentle so as not to break any more tiles.

  3. Step 3

Use the wedge to prop up the higher tiles to make room for the new tile. Use the pry bar to hold open the opening while you slip the wedge underneath.

  4. Step 4

Opening the hole will probably reveal further dust and debris. Again clean the area out with your hand or the small brush. Remove all the nails with the pliers.

  5. Step 5

Check the underlying felt for any rips or tears in the material. If there are any, repair with the roof cement. The cement doesn’t have to be dry before doing the last step.

  6. Step 6

If the new tile is longer than the existing roof tiles, cut with the wet saw until it is the proper shape and size. Attach the hanger strips to the tile, and slowly push into place, removing the wedges along the way. The hanger strips should click into place. That’s all there is to it! You’ve now fixed your cement roof.

Tips & Warnings
  • It might be best to measure the tiles before starting the project. That way you don’t have to stop in the middle of the project to fix the tile size.
  • If you have to walk on the roof, make sure to walk carefully, with proper weight distribution.
  • If your cement roof is not set up with hanger strips, then these directions will not work for your roof. Make sure you have the right roof before starting the project.
