Contact local travel guides. If you live near a larger city you may want to see if there is a tourism bureau for that city and ask for brochures. Many larger cities that thrive on tourism also showcase interesting things to see and do in the nearby area as well. It could be that they have some listings that will bring your vacation close to home closer than you realized was possible.

Find interesting things to do close to home that are unique to your area. Almost every state in the country has something to offer that is unique to that area. When you compound this with the fact that many cities are within easy driving distance (three hours or less) of many other major cities there is a lot of ground to cover that could easily be considered close to home. Find those interesting things to do that are unique to your state and other neighboring states and make it a mission to experience them all--one vacation close to home at a time.

Ask if discounts are available to citizens of your city or state. Many museums and entertainment venues offer discounts available to citizens and/or travelers. Pick up travel guides and see what discounts are available but be sure to compare them to the discounts that are available to locals (you'll be surprised how deep some of these discounts can be). This allows your money to go a lot further and gives you some new things to enjoy and explore.

Consider camping. This is a form of travel that allows you to enjoy a weekend away without going too terribly far and is less expensive than staying in hotels. Camping also allows you the option of cooking your own food and using mother nature as an inspiring source of entertainment that is suitable for the entire family. If expenses are an option see what camping equipment can be borrowed. Even if you must purchase some of the equipment you should still find that it is less expensive than your average hotel or resort stay.

Use your vacation time to take a class in woodworking, pottery, cooking, or scuba diving locally rather than traveling far away. You will find that you are doing something enjoyable with your vacation close to home and you won't need expensive airfare, hotel rentals, or restaurant meals that add up quickly.
