Hot stone massage is a relatively new form of massage but a very popular one at most day spas. You can learn how to perform your own hot stone massage and give someone a treat that they might not be able to afford to have done professionally.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Smooth, flat stones
  • Pan of water
  • Stove
  1. Step 1

Choose some stones. You can find stones just about anywhere. Go for a walk around your neighborhood and look for flat, smooth stones about the size of the palm of your hand or a little smaller. If you can't find stones in your area or if you want to use the same stones used in the spa, you can purchase basalt massage stones on the internet.

  2. Step 2

Heat up the stones. The best way to warm the stones is by placing them in a pan of water and heating the water. The water should not be heated to any hotter than 150 degrees. Using a food thermometer will ensure that no one gets burned.

  3. Step 3

Have your massage subject disrobe and get comfortable on a massage table, bed, or some cushions on the floor. Keep your massage stones in the hot water until you are ready to use them. Remove one stone from the pan and dry it with a clean towel.

  4. Step 4

Massage your subject with the hot stones by stroking them with gentle pressure on the muscles of the back, neck, and shoulders. Basically you are using the stones in place of your hands to give the massage. Massage the backs and fronts of the thighs, the arms, calves, and feet. Replace the hot stone with a new one once it cools off and continue.

  5. Step 5

For added relief to sore muscles, you can place hot stones on the affected areas and leave them there while you work on other parts of the body. Replace the stones once they cool down and massage the areas after they have been warmed by the stones for at least ten minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the stones are not too hot. If your subject is uncomfortable, the stones are too warm. The heat should be soothing, not painful. Touch the stone to your wrist before using to make sure it isn't too hot.
