Sometimes, the simplest tools are the best. Bolt cutters are a great way to cut chains, locks, fences, and hinges using simple principles of leverage. If you're stuck out and you want to get in, a bolt cutter is what you need.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bolt Cutters
  1. Step 1

Adjust the bolt cutters. Turn the set screw so that the blades meet when the handles are still at least 8 inches apart.

  2. Step 2

Choose the right target. Most bolt cutters work well with anything from chain link fence to average-sized padlocks. Heavy or reinforced padlocks might require heavier tools.

  3. Step 3

Grip one handle in each hand, with the cutters facing forward.

  4. Step 4

Line up the cutters so that the target to be cut is right in the middle, between the two blades.

  5. Step 5

Breathing out, forcefully push the two sides together. The bolt cutters should cut right through.

  6. Step 6

If one try doesn't do it, recenter the bolt cutters around the notch you have just cut in the target.

  7. Step 7

    Repeat step 5.

Tips & Warnings
  • Occasionally, gripping with the bolt cutters and twisting back and forth can help to sever a stubborn lock or chain.
  • Never cut live electric wires with bolt cutters unless you are using ones especially made for the purpose!
