Instructions

    • 1

Get in good shape. Hiking into the Grand Canyon is a fair bit of work, and hiking out again is even harder. Start working out at least a few months before your trip.

    • 2

Plan to hike at the right time of year. The winter can be dangerously icy, and the summer can be way too hot. October, November, April, and May are the most recommended times to take the hike.

    • 3

Plan to take the Bright Angel Trail. Although there are several other well-maintained trails, this is the best one for beginners. It is comparatively easy, and there are plenty of other people there in case you run into trouble.

    • 4

Reserve a place at Phantom Ranch. It is a bit pricey, but you get a hot shower, a good meal, and a place to sleep. Even better, you won't have to carry down a tent and dinner. Staying for two nights will give you a chance to rest up before the long hike back up.

    • 5

Plan to dress in layers. Cold mornings can give way to hot days, so you should be prepared for any weather you might encounter.

    • 6

Get good basic hiking gear. Good shoes, a sturdy backpack, sunblock, a basic first aid kit, and a hiking stick are key. A flashlight, bug spray, and a camera are also a good idea.

    • 7

Plan to stay fed and hydrated. Pack a lot of water and trail mix.

    • 8

Check the weather before you go.

    • 9

Get up early, eat breakfast, and be ready to start hiking by 7.
