During the spring and summer whiffle ball can be a very popular game for children in the back yard. It can even be a challenging game for adults as well. The trick is that adults make the game challenging by making the whiffle ball dash and dart in different directions when throwing it to the batter. Some pitches that move are called curve balls, but you can also throw a slider as well. The difference between a slider and a curve is that a slider doesn't drop as much as a curve ball.

How to throw a slider in whiffle ball

  1. Step 1

Gather enough players to play a game of whiffle ball. Ideally you need at least four players on each team. The great thing about whiffle ball though, is that you can actually play it with just one person on each team if you are short on people. You just need a pitcher and a batter.

  2. Step 2

Prepare to throw a slider in whiffle ball. To do this you need to find out what type of whiffle ball you have. There typically are two different types of whiffle balls. One is the classic whiffle ball with multiple holes around the surface of the ball that you can place your finger tips on. The other is a molded plastic ball that looks like a baseball with no fingertip holes.

  3. Step 3

Throwing a slider with the classic whiffle ball is the easiest type of slider to throw. When you hold the whiffle ball in your grip you want to place your fingertips on the holes to one side or the other of the middle of the ball. You decide which side to put your fingertips on based on if you are pitching to a right or left handed batter. If you are facing a right handed batter place your fingers on the right side of the center of the ball. If they are left handed, place it on the left side.

  4. Step 4

Throw the traditional whiffle ball with a normal throwing motion. When you release the ball it will start to tail away from the batter, which is why it is called a slider. It appears to "slide" away from them. The further you are from the batter when you throw the ball, the more distance the whiffle ball will slide.

  5. Step 5

With a molded whiffle ball, throwing a slider is a little harder. Typically these balls have raised plastic seams. Hold the whifffle ball with the seams perpendicular to the ground. To throw a slider to a right handed batter place your two fingers on the right seam of the ball. If you are throwing it to a left handed batter place your two fingers on the left seam of the whiffle ball.

  6. Step 6

Throw the ball in a standard motion, as you release it once again the ball will tail away from the batter resulting in a successful slider in whiffle ball.

Tips & Warnings
  • Distance is key, the further you are from the batter the more time the whiffle ball will have to "slide".
  • Do not snap your wrist when throwing a slider. Save that for curve balls.
