How to Treat Dogs with Allergies

1. Consult with your veterinarian to properly diagnose allergies and to discuss treatments and possible causes.

2. Give your dog a Benadryl tablet (consult with your vet for clearance and dosage first). Observe them to make sure they don't react adversely to the medicine. They will probably fall asleep.

3. Ask yourself if there have been any recent changes to your environment. A new floor cleaner, carpet deodorizer or even a plant could be the likely culprit causing your pet's discomfort. Remove anything new to the environment that you believe may be triggering the allergies and observe your dog to see if they continue to have allergic reactions.

4. Consider switching your dog's food if you cannot find any environmental causes. Dog's can develop new allergies even toward food that they have been eating for a long time. Switching your dog to a hypo-allergenic food and treats should alleviate symptoms if food is the issue.

5. Bathe your dog regularly using a hypo-allergenic shampoo.
