June 29th is National Waffle Iron Day. Waffle irons were originally a long handled device consisting of two metal plates held together by a hinge. One side was heated at a time, so knowing the right moment to turn the waffle iron was a skill acquired through trial and error. Here is how to Celebrate National Waffle Iron Day.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Various waffle irons
  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • yeast
  • Eggs
  • Honey
  • Fresh fruit
  • Syrup
  • Whipped topping
  • Jam
  1. Step 1

Use an electric waffle maker, or an antique non-electric one, according to your preference and its availability. Mix together two cups flour, one cup sugar, one tablespoon honey, 1/2 teaspoon salt and two eggs. Beat by hand until all ingredients are well mixed but still slightly lumpy. If you are going to make Belgian waffles, add a teaspoon of instant yeast.

  2. Step 2

Spoon waffle batter into center of waffle iron, smoothing it into all the grooves with a spoon until just before it reaches the edges. Wipe up any drips with a clean, damp paper towel. Close lid gently, wiping away any batter squeezed out.

  3. Step 3

If waffle iron is electric, set timer for three to five minutes. Check waffle by carefully opening waffle iron. if it is still sticky, close and allow to continue baking. If it is golden and the lid of the waffle iron comes away from the waffle, it is ready to release. Remove from waffle iron and place on a warm (but not hot!) plate.

  4. Step 4

Top waffle with fruit, jam, whipped topping, syrup, chocolate shavings, or any other tasty item you prefer. Enjoy!

  5. Step 5

Don't forget to clean and season your waffle iron after use. To clean, wipe gently with damp cloth until all residue is removes. Use a pastry brush if necessary to clean the grooves and crevices. Coat your pastry brush with olive oil and, then, lightly brush the iron; afterwards, wipe dry with a paper towel. Turn waffle iron on for one minute to heat the oil evenly over the device. Allow to cool completely before storing. Store with paper towel between the two sides of the waffle iron.
