Things You'll Need:
- A sick gorilla
- A safe comfortable place for your gorilla to recover.
- A general knowledge of basic gorilla illnesses.
- Access to medical supplies
- Access to qualified medical care and equipment
-
Step 1
Increase your knowledge on common illnesses gorillas get before he ever gets sick. Then you may notice certain symptoms right away when he does get sick. This is important as some illness such as Ebola , can be fatal to gorillas and other primates. It, and other illness can also be transferred to humansMake a list of any illness possibilities based on the knowledge you have , that match his symptoms.
-
Step 2
Check all prior records to be sure your gorilla has had all mandatory vaccinations. If he is current, examine your gorilla closely. How is he acting? What has he eaten recently? Is his nose running? Is he shaking his head like something hurts ? Are his hands clasped over his head? Gorillas often do this when their ears or head are hurting. Is is favoring a foot or hand over the other suddenly? He may have a cut or splinterLook around his enclosure. Is anything out of place ? Are there any insects or spiders clustering around that might have stung or bitten him?Write down anything you notice. It could be useful later
-
Step 3
Give your gorilla a bit of food or water. Don't give too much ,just enough to see if he will eat. If he does eat it, is he holding it down. Make a note of the result.
-
Step 4
Talk in a soothing voice to your pet. A sick gorilla will probably be a little grumpy! Even if you have had him since infancy, He is still a wild animal so avoid sudden moves or things that scare or irritate him
-
Step 5
Read over the notes you have made in assessing your gorilla's condition a final time. Finish writing down anything else you can think of no matter how insignificant it seems.
-
Step 6
A face only mama can loveCall your gorilla's vet. If you don't have one yet look up exotic animal veterinarians in your community. If there are none, call the local zoo and ask to talk to someone there. Many exotic animal vets will come to your home. Then if they need to take your pet in for tests, they have the equipment to move your pet safely without harm to you or your animal. In most cases, this is absolutely necessary. Having a pet gorilla is not like having a pet dog.You can't just run to a local pet store for supplies for even common illnesses. Having an exotic pet like a gorilla takes a a lot of work and commitment. But just look at that face! Isn't he worth it!
