Coping with your abilities is the key to maintaining a well adjusted life. Although being blind requires lifestyle modifications, making the necessary adjustments increases your happiness as well as your ability to enjoy life to the fullest.

      Develop a strong support system. Express your feelings to trusted friends and family members to prevent undue stress. Join a support group to interact with others who share your condition. Never be afraid to ask for or receive help when it's needed.

      Modify your home and lifestyle for safety. Keep your home free of clutter to prevent falls and make it easier to learn the layout. For example, learn that it takes 25 steps to walk from the kitchen to the living room and use this as a guide when moving throughout your house. Purchase safety items including telephones and alarms especially designed for the visually impaired.

      Accept a companion animal. Seeing eye dogs are often a popular choice. Once trained, the companion animal can help you negotiate obstacles as well as prevent loneliness. Contact local companion animal training organizations to find out the requirements for being assigned an animal.
