Instructions

    • 1

Find a reputable agency. Most families prefer hiring nannies from agencies as opposed to hiring independent ones. This is because the agency will do all the paperwork and necessary background checks that the families may not have the time and bandwidth to do. You need to find an agency that is known to take care of both nannies needs and families' needs. Find one that would make sure you will end up in a good place and that they will make sure you are taken cared of.

    • 2

Prepare paperwork before meeting with agencies. You would need immigration papers if you are a non-Canadian citizen or resident.

    • 3

Meet minimum work requirements. Most agencies would require at least 1 year of full time working as a nanny or au-pair, nurse or pre-school teacher. Must love to work with families and be patient with kids.

    • 4

      Speak fluent English or French.

    • 5

You should become proficient in First Aid or CPR. Take classes to get those skills, if necessary.

    • 6

Must be able to produce police clearance.

    • 7

Driving ability is a positive, but not a must.

    • 8

Be able to produce excellent verifiable references.

    • 9

Be able to live in with the familiy. Bear in mind that even though there are part-time nanny positions available, the most in demand in Canada are live-in au-pairs. So you must take this into consideration if you are applying for a nanny job in Canada. Good thing is, if you are not a Canadian native, you do not have to look for a place to stay. The boarding and lodging are free.

    • 10

Be flexible. Sometimes you may be required to do other household work like light cleaning or dish washing as well as laundry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Investigate the background of the agency, make sure that they are legally operating. Do not pay them money unless it is absolutely necessary. Read the fine prints of your contract.
