As an actor, a large part of your job involves auditioning. Since quality auditions can sometimes be hard to come by, you want to ensure that you do good work every time you walk into an audition room. The more auditions that can translate into bookings, the better your career and the more money you'll make. Here are some tips to book more acting jobs.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Preparation
  • Confidence
  • Positive attitude
  1. Step 1

Prepare thoroughly for your audition. Generally, you'll receive your audition sides at least a day in advance of the audition. Take the time necessary to fully work on the sides.

  2. Step 2

Memorize your lines so you feel more comfortable with the material. When you memorize, you'll often find that you have more freedom in the audition to connect with the reader. You should keep your sides in your hand during the audition so you can refer to them if necessary.

  3. Step 3

Get plenty of sleep the night before. You want to feel well-rested for your audition.

  4. Step 4

Drink plenty of water beforehand and bring a water bottle with you. You may find you experience a dry mouth if you are nervous. Have water handy, just in case.

  5. Step 5

Enter the audition room with a positive attitude. Confidence reads to a room. If you feel good about yourself, they will feel good about you too. Even if you want the job very badly, try to keep the desperation at bay. Remember, it's just another audition.

  6. Step 6

Greet every person in the room warmly with a smile. If you are auditioning for theater, you'll likely be auditioning in front of the casting director and the play's director. If you are auditioning for television, you'll just be reading for the casting director at a pre-read. If you get chosen for a producers' session, you'll then be auditioning for the episode's director, the episode's writers and the producers of the show. If you are auditioning for film, you'll initially read for the casting director, and if you get called back, you'll then read for the director, writer and possibly producers.

  7. Step 7

Behave professionally and politely throughout the entire audition. Remember that they are not only assessing your talent but if they want to work with you. If you are rude or take up too much of their time, they can only assume that you will behave that way on set.

  8. Step 8

Thank everyone before you leave the audition room. Make eye contact when you address people. This shows confidence and strength.

  9. Step 9

Write down the names and addresses of people you met in the audition room. You'll want to add these people to your industry contacts list so you can keep them apprised of your career happenings. They'll be more likely to call you in for future auditions if you stay in touch.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many aspects of the booking process are out of your control. Go into the room, do good work and feel good when you leave.
  • Most casting people prefer to avoid shaking hands in auditions. Since they see so many people, they are concerned about spreading germs. Follow the other person's lead. If he does not extend a hand, don't offer yours.
