One of the requirements for most restaurants around the world is a menu. This allows the customers to see what foods are available and choose something they like or want to try. Much thought should be given to the menu before it is ready for use, and you can ensure your menu works well for your business by learning how to design a menu for a restaurant.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider the style of restaurant as well as the clientele. The first step in designing a menu for the restaurant is to think about what the style of the restaurant is and how the menu should match it. For example, a fine dining establishment should have a menu that appears sophisticated, while a family-friendly eatery can opt for menus that contain bright colors and fun pictures. It is also important to consider what type of clientele your restaurant has as this can affect your menu. Elderly citizens often need large fonts in order to properly read the menu, thus a restaurant in a neighborhood densely populated with seniors may have bigger words.

  2. Step 2

Break down different sections of food. The overall layout of the menu should be appealing to the eye, and a great way to do this is by separating out the different groups of food you offer in your restaurant. Many choose to break out appetizers from the main courses as well as divide the main courses by the different types of foods such as beef, chicken or vegetarian. This makes the menu easier to read, and the diners have a much simpler time of narrowing down what they want to eat.

  3. Step 3

Determine how much you want to spend on printing. A number of different factors will affect how much it costs to have your menus printed. These include color, size and quantity. The larger size and the more color you have, the more the printing will cost. However, a larger printing quantity usually lowers the price, which is why it may be beneficial to order extra copies of your menu when you have them printed.

  4. Step 4

Add color or photos to jazz up your menu. People want to see a menu that is appealing as this helps to increase their appetite and desire for good food. You can make your menu more attractive to customers by adding colors or photos to it. Many chefs and owners add pictures of their best or favorite dishes to the menu since they know that people are most likely to choose a menu item that they can see rather than something they can read about.

Tips & Warnings
  • You should limit the amount of different fonts on your restaurant menu to three as this makes it easier for people to read.
  • A number of different layout programs can allow you to layout and design your menu. These include Microsoft Publisher, Adobe PageMaker, Adobe Illustrator, Quark Xpress, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and more.
  • Remember to proof your menu before printing. Failure to do this can result in extra, unneeded costs.
