How to Tie a Triple Loop Bow

Triple loop bows use three layers of ribbon loops, with the largest loops on the bottom and a small loop on top, to make a simple, elegant bow. You can leave the loops neatly stacked, or fluff them out to make a fuller bow. Either way, triple loop bows are great for putting the finishing touch on a gift package, or for accenting flowers. You can make triple loop bows from shiny gift wrapping ribbon, or from satin or grosgrain ribbon. You’ll need to secure the loops together with floral wire or bow-tying wire, or with a narrow piece of matching ribbon. You can find bow-tying ribbon and wire in craft stores or online.

Instructions

  1. Tie a Triple Loop Bow

    • 1

Start the bow several inches away from the end of the ribbon, to leave a tail for the bow.

    • 2

Make a loop in the ribbon the size you want the bottom of the bow. Hold the loop together with your fingers.

    • 3

Twist the ribbon and make another loop the same size on the opposite side of the bow.

    • 4

Twist the ribbon and make a smaller loop of ribbon on top of the first loop. Twist the ribbon and make the same size loop on the opposite side.

    • 5

Pinch the center of the bow with your thumb on top and forefinger underneath. Wrap the ribbon over your thumb to make a small loop, then pull your thumb out, while still holding the loops together.

    • 6

Cut off the ribbon, so that the ribbon tail is the same size as the ribbon tail on the first side.

    • 7

Insert a small piece of narrow ribbon or wire through the small loop on top of the bow. Wrap the narrow ribbon or wire around the bow, and tie it together or twist it together like a twist tie on the underside of the bow. Cut off the excess narrow ribbon with scissors, or use a wire cutter to cut off the excess wire.

    • 8

Trim the ends of the ribbon tails by cutting them at an angle, or by cutting V-shaped notches into the ends.

    • 9

Adjust the loops so that the bow looks nice and even. You can leave the loops as they are for a narrow, elegant bow, or gently pull the loops away from each other to make a puffier bow.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add more layers of loops of ribbon to the triple loop bow, to make it any size you want.

  • Use caution when working with wire, wire cutters and scissors.
